Victorian fox & ship intaglio seal
A breathtaking seal dating back to the late Georgian/early Victorian era.
A magnificently sculpted gold fox sits proud atop a deeply chased rococo foliate mount. Beneath this is a pristine carnelian intaglio of extraordinary quality. A fully rigged sailing ship in full sail with the Latin motto "Ad Littora Tendit" — "She strives toward the shore" or "Pressing toward land."
This is a deeply personal and poetic motto. The ship straining toward home, toward safe harbour, toward land after a long and dangerous voyage. It speaks of safe return and homecoming, perseverance and determination, hope and safe passage. A prayer almost, carved in stone.
The fox tests between 9ct-12ct gold and as is often the case, there is possibly some other base metal underneath. Whilst the fox has lost some definition from age, the intaglio remains in remarkable condition.
A truly magnificent wearable piece of history, with beautiful sentiment!
