Victorian 9ct gold & banded agate lion compass fob
Lion jewellery was highly sought after during the Victorian era thanks to their obsession with symbolism, romanticism and exotic exploration. These majestic motifs allowed Victorians to express powerful virtues like courage, loyalty, and majesty through their personal jewellery.
This beautiful example was both decorative and functional. It would have been worn as a fob on a pocket watch chain and could also be used as a compass. Although lets face it, the wearer of this piece wasn't likely to every be stranded and directionless, and so the compass once again was more likely a Victorian symbol.
Made from solid 9ct gold (XRF tested), with original glass on one side and banded agate on the other, this piece is chunky, heavy and just gorgeous. Naturally we wouldn't advise using the compass to find your way home as it's no longer accurate but it sure looks great. The surface scratches on the glass show that this piece was worn a lot and so the fact it remains in the condition it's in, is a true testament to how well it's made.
