Victorian 18ct gold & bloodstone poison ring
A very rare and beautiful find!!!
Named after the popular legend that they were used to secretly slip poison into an enemies drink, the poison ring became particularly fashionable during the Victorian era. Given their strong culture for mourning, these rings were well suited for holding tiny mementos like a lock of hair or miniature picture of a loved one. They could equally have been used to store solid perfume, making them both fashionably romantic and practical. Think of them as the locket of the finger.
Given their intricate hinges, not many have survived over the years. However, this beautiful example remains in wonderful condition with just one small lighter coloured solder mark to one of the shoulders (see pics). Made from highly decorative 18ct yellow gold with a bloodstone shield. The shield opens to reveal the hidden chamber and closes securely, staying well in place. We LOVE this piece!
