Late Georgian/Early Victorian amethyst beehive intaglio seal
The beehive was one of the most powerful and respected symbols in Georgian and Victorian society, representing Industry & hard work, community & cooperation, order & loyalty and prosperity. The symbol of the beehive & bees, with the French motto 'suivez l'example' or 'follow the example', is essentially saying 'be industrious, be dutiful, work hard and be a productive member of society'. An aspirational and moral message indeed!
Made from 14ct gold (XRF tested) and amethyst, it would have been used to seal letters with wax, leaving a clean stamp and signature of sorts. Beautifully preserved with minimal signs of wear, this practical piece of history can now be worn as a rare, eye catching, and conversation starting charm.
